Older Voters and Age Bias in Presidential Elections

A Pew Research poll in February 2008 found that more older adults than younger adults felt that presidential candidate John McCain was “too old” to be president.

Factix Research, LLC commissioned political consultant Michael Brooks to explore why older adults felt this way, how this continues a trend seen in other presidential elections since the 1980s, and why historically older adults have voted for the older candidate despite concerns about his age.

As the U.S. population ages, understanding the voter behaviors of older adults will become a more important factor for future candidates.
